Byrne Dairy Pays for Signal Improvement Near New Endicott Store

Drivers in Endicott soon will find it easier to make a left turn at a busy East Main Street intersection.

The traffic signal near the soon-to-open Byrne Dairy & Deli store is being modified. The store is scheduled to open this month.

Byrne Dairy vice president Christian Brunelle said the company is paying for the change to the signal.

A spokesman for the New York state Department of Transportation said a "protected left turn arrow is being added to the existing signal to mitigate the increase in left turning traffic due to the store."

A DOT statement provided to WNBF News said: "The improvement was analyzed, designed and being constructed by the developer. This is the only change to the traffic signal."

In recent years there have been a few crashes at the intersection in which people were injured. The intersection is located a short distance south of Jennie F. Snapp Middle School.

Endicott police chief Patrick Garey said he welcomed any changes at the intersection that might make it safer.

But village Mayor Linda Jackson said she is concerned that the left turn arrow for eastbound motorists could cause traffic delays. She said she's taking a wait-and-see attitude about the change.

Jackson said if drivers notice that the change is causing traffic to back up, they might seek alternate routes.

The Byrne Dairy store is to open on May 25.
