New coronavirus infections in the region remain low in spite of concerns about the spread of the new, highly contagious Delta variant. That mutation has recently infected people who are even fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Still, health officials say the vaccines are effective in preventing serious illness and hospitalization from the variant.

Broome County is hosting a number of vaccination clinics July 1. The single dose Johnson and Johnson will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Schneider’s Market in Kirkwood and from 5:05 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Trucks on the Tracks food truck event at the train station on Lewis Street in Binghamton.  The first dose of the Moderna vaccine is being given at the Health Department on Front Street from 1:10 p.m. to 3 p.m.

There was only one new case of COVID-19 reported in the Southern Tier during the June 30 update.  Broome County reported one new case while no new cases were reported in Cortland and Tioga Counties.  There were no updates for Delaware or Chenango Counties, which have both now going to releasing new statistics weekly.  Delaware County will have updated numbers for the week July 1.  Chenango County had a report June 30 and won’t have new information released to the public on the Health Department facebook page until in the afternoon of July 6.
