Broome Executive Says COVID Numbers May Be Stabilizing
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says the number of COVID-19 cases in Broome County finally seems to be hitting a plateau and may be headed slowly down.
The trend is being seen in many areas of the country where vaccination rates are higher.
Garnar says the county, however, is still seeing fairly substantial numbers of new positives as testing ramps back up. The County recently reopened a rapid testing site at the Health Department due to a high demand for tests. The Health Department site in the office’s parking lot on Front Street has been doing about five-dozen tests a day but is capable of doing up to 100 tests a day, Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.
The testing is by appointment only.
Broome County had 127 new positives to report yesterday with 664 active cases but there have been no additional deaths since the Tuesday report.
Elsewhere around the Southern Tier, there were no new deaths reported October 7. Chenango County reported 24 new cases, Cortland County 18, Tioga County 32 and Delaware County in its last report Wednesday, October 6 had 38 new cases from their previous update on October 4.
New York State this week surpassed 57,000 deaths from the pandemic. 23 new fatalities reported October 7 put the state’s death toll at 57,031. There were 5,243 new cases for a total of $2,439,160 cases since the start of the pandemic.
