People filling up their vehicles at Binghamton area gasoline stations are happy to see even a small break in escalating prices at the pump.

Motorists who were refueling at Broome County convenience stores on Wednesday said they were pleased that prices fell by about 16 cents a gallon overnight. But most said they are bracing for another round of increases in the weeks ahead.

New York and a few other states have declared a gas "tax holiday" for several months in response to the dramatic jump in prices in recent months. Broome County's tax on gasoline has been capped at $3 a gallon. The tax breaks are scheduled to run through December 1.

SNK Fuels at Front Street and Smith Hill Road in the town of Chenango appeared to have the lowest posted price in the Binghamton area Wednesday. The cash price for regular was $4.539.

The store manager said the gasoline price there almost always was significantly lower than other nearby stations, even though the fuel comes from the same terminal in Vestal.

A Coventry man who operates a lawn mowing service was refueling his pickup truck and filling several plastic gasoline cans. He said he was pleased to enjoy a short-term discount, even as he prepares to pay $5 a gallon at some point in the near future.

Despite the tax break, gasoline remains more expensive in New York than in many other states. One driver noted he paid only $4.25 a gallon in Virginia on Tuesday.

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
