Broome County Women, This Is One Appointment Worth Making
Let’s be real, the thought of getting screened for cancer can be nerve-wracking. I get it, and just thinking about it makes my heart race a little. But here’s a truth I can’t ignore: not catching something until it’s too late is so much scarier.
I recently read that a surprising number of women only plan to get checked if they feel something is wrong. The thing is, many cancers, especially cervical cancer, don’t show any warning signs until they’ve had a head start. That’s why waiting for symptoms just isn’t worth the risk.
Hope in Early Detection
Here’s something that made me feel hopeful: when women hear how powerful early detection can be, most are ready to make that appointment. Knowing that a simple screening could make all the difference is a game-changer. That’s why, during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, the Cancer Services Program of the Southern Tier (CSP) is going all out to spread the word, showing us that keeping up with checkups could truly save lives.

Prevention Is in Your Hands
Cervical cancer is a cancer that we have the power to prevent as long as we don’t put off our checkups. Screenings can spot trouble way before it becomes scarier, and if something is found early, treatment is much easier. The biggest risk? Skipping those routine visits or letting years go by between them. If you’ve been putting it off (trust me, you’re not alone), now’s a great time to talk with your doctor or reach out to CSP for help.
Support Without the Stress
If you’re worried about the cost, here’s some good news: the Cancer Services Program of the Southern Tier offers free screenings for women 40 and over who don't have insurance. If something unusual pops up, they’ll cover follow-up tests and even help you get into treatment programs if you need them. No one should have to skip a screening because of money.
Taking Care of Ourselves, Together
So, this month, and every month, let’s have each other’s backs and make our health a priority. Don’t wait until something feels off. Taking care of ourselves now is a gift for our future selves.

Your Next Step to Peace of Mind
If you want to learn more or see if you qualify for a free screening, give CSP a call at 607-778-3900. You deserve peace of mind, and this is one call that could really make a difference.
