Broome County Park Beach Closed Due to Algae Bloom
The subject of algae seems to be on everyone's lips lately as dogs all over the country have been dying after being exposed to toxic blue-green algae.
Authorities aren't taking any chances and are immediately closing swimming areas where algae is popping up, including right here in Broome County.
In a press release issued by the office of Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, the beach at Dorchester Park in Whitney Point has been closed. The Broome County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Services made the decision to close the beach when an unidentified algae bloom was discovered.
A sample of the algae has been collected and will be tested by the Broome County Health Department. The beach will remain closed until health officials can determine whether or not the algae is dangerous to humans and animals.
If you're looking for another place to cool down and go for a swim, the beaches at both Greenwood Park and Nathaniel Cole Park are still open. For more information, reach out to Elizabeth Woidt, Director of Parks, Recreation & Youth Services at 607-778-2193.
