It seems like every time that I turn on the news, I'm seeing a story about a car crash. It's scary to see especially when it involves the loss of life.  Did you know that car crashes are one of the leading causes of death for children aged1 to 13?

It's scary, but there is something that we all can do to bring that number down. You can reduce the risk of death by over 70% if you properly use the child safety seats. That's why we have to make sure our little ones are strapped in safely when we hit the road.

We probably think that we have our child's car seat properly installed but that might not be the case. In fact, in Broome County, only 12% of the child safety seats checked by our local Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians are being used the right way.

So, to tackle this issue head-on, the Broome County Traffic Safety Program is hosting a  car seat check event. Mark your calendars for this Friday, August 30th from 3PM to 6PM, at the Johnson City Fire Department located at 320 Harry L Drive, Johnson City.

Specially certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand to provide free child safety seat checks. Plus, they'll have loads of information on how to use car seats properly. That's right, you'll get free expert advice that just might save your child's life.

When you come to the event, make sure to bring your child safety seat(s), your little ones, your vehicle, and if possible, the car seat and vehicle manuals. It's a first-come, first-served basis, and no appointment is necessary.

For more information or if you have any questions, reach out to the Broome County Traffic Safety Program at 607-778-2807. They are more than happy to help keep your child safe when you take to the road.
