Boscov’s Makes Changes to Accommodate Parking Garage Demolition
It's been more than 100 days since demolition crews began tearing down the old city-owned parking ramp next door to the Binghamton Boscov's department store.
The project to remove the crumbling Water Street garage started a few days after Christmas.
City officials have not announced a completion date for the demolition project, which is being done by Gorick Construction.
Boscov's vice president Jacob Stein on Monday afternoon said steps had been taken to ensure that the work would be "as minimally disruptive as possible." He said "safety is the number one priority."
Stein said Boscov's officials have been working closely to coordinate activities with the demolition crew. Some merchandise at the northern end of the store occasionally has been moved out of certain sections at stages of the project.
Entrances to the store adjacent to the old garage on Water Street and on the floors above the main level are out of service because of the parking garage work.
Once the site of the old garage has been cleared, construction on a new 549-space parking facility is expected to get underway. The garage replacement project has an estimated cost of $23 million.
After the new garage has been completed, city officials have said a 122-unit apartment complex will be built above it. The residential project is expected to cost at least $25 million.
