Thousands of western Broome County residents are being advised to boil their water before drinking it.

The Endicott water department issued the advisory early Friday morning. It affects water customers in the village of Endicott, areas of Endwell and parts of West Corners.

According to the advisory, the water system lost pressure around 10 p.m. Thursday because of a main line break at the crossing between West Wendell Street and Glendale Drive.

When pressure is lost, there is a possibility that untreated water and harmful microbes could enter the system.

Those served by the Endicott water supply should not drink the water until boiling it first.

Water should be brought to a boil and allowed to boil for one minute, then allowed to cool before it is used.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.

Endicott water department officials could not be reached for information about the water line break or whether repair work had been completed.
