Binghamton University Confrontation Receives National Attention

Video of a heated dispute involving students on the Binghamton University campus has gone viral.

The confrontation erupted Thursday after representatives of two groups set up tables outside the Union on the Vestal campus.

According to a statement released by university vice president for student affairs Brian Rose, the College Republicans and Turning Point USA had not received necessary permission for the activity.

Rose said the groups did not move from the site when university officials asked them to do so.

The student newspaper Pipe Dream reported about 200 people gathered to protest the activity, which included signs supporting gun rights.

Some protesters pulled down tables and swept away literature in an effort to shut down the activity.

University police eventually directed the tabling groups to leave the area and escorted them away. No injuries were reported and no one was arrested.

John Restuccia, the president of the College Republicans group, said charges should have been filed against some of the protesters. He said charges such as harassment, assault, menacing and vandalism would have been appropriate.

Restuccia said the organizations targeted by the protesters are exploring possible legal action.

According to the Daily Wire, Turning Point USA president Lacey Kestecher recorded video of what transpired Thursday. Seven minutes of the hour-and-a-half recording have been posted on YouTube. The video had been viewed more than 88,000 times as of Monday afternoon.
