
The Man Who Shot a Binghamton Victim in the Chest Over an Ex-Girlfriend Is Now Heading to Prison
A Binghamton man faces nearly a decade in prison after pleading guilty in a violent shooting case that could have turned deadly.
The Broome County District Attorney's Office says 22-year-old Shawn A. Lynch pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and is expected to serve nine years in a New York State prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
An Argument Over an Ex-Girlfriend Turned Deadly
The case dates to April 13, 2025, when Binghamton police responded to reports of shots fired in the city. According to investigators, the incident began when the victim drove behind his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle, and the two became involved in a heated argument.

As the situation escalated, the ex-girlfriend pulled her car over to the side of the road, and the victim brought his vehicle to a stop directly behind hers. Authorities say Lynch was positioned in the driveway of a nearby property when he opened fire, sending multiple rounds toward the victim at close range.
Multiple Shots Fired at Close Range
Investigators say Lynch fired multiple shots, hitting the victim in the arm and chest. Officials say the shooting seriously injured the victim and put others nearby at risk.
Shooting Left Victim Fighting for His Life
Officers later learned the victim had been taken to Wilson Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and underwent emergency surgery. He survived.
District Attorney Calls Violence “Senseless”
District Attorney F. Paul Battisti described the incident as a dangerous and senseless act of violence. He said the case shows how quickly situations can escalate and emphasized that violent crimes like this will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
Binghamton Police, State Police Among Agencies That Cracked the Case
The investigation involved several agencies, including the Binghamton Police Department, Johnson City Police Department, and New York State Police. Senior Assistant District Attorney Alexander Czebiniak prosecuted the case.

Lynch is scheduled to be sentenced on June 24, 2026, in Broome County Court before Judge Carol A. Cocchiola. The victim, who survived the shooting after emergency surgery, continues to recover from his injuries.
