Binghamton Police Seek Gunman in Shooting Near City Deli

City detectives are looking for a suspect after a man was shot in the area of a busy deli and grocery store.

Police were dispatched to Chenango Street on the North Side after the shooting was reported around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The incident occurred near the Northside Deli & Grocery store at 511 Chenango Street. It apparently happened outside the business.

People who were in the area said they heard two gunshots. A man was said to have sustained a wound to an arm. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment.

Police Chief Joseph Zikuski and Detective Captain Cory Minor conferred with patrol officers and investigators at the scene of the shooting. They were not available to comment on the incident.

The shooting occurred on Chenango Street, three blocks north of the Interstate 81 bridge where a repair project has resulted in a closure to vehicular traffic for nearly 11 months.

Police and ambulances must use a detour to reach the North Side neighborhood, which can slow their response to emergencies.
