For the second time in a month, a bust and monument honoring Christopher Columbus at the Broome County Courthouse has been damaged.

Vandals targeted the statue sometime after Columbus Day observances ended in downtown Binghamton.

According to WBNG 12 News, some sort of substance had been splashed on the monument and a cardboard sign with the word "Murderer" was hung around the bust of Columbus.

A Broome County government spokesman said maintenance workers were dispatched to clean the statue early Tuesday morning.

Flowers had been placed at the base of the monument on Monday, coinciding with the annual Columbus Day Tournament of Bands parade.

Binghamton police detective captain Jack Collins on Monday had said investigators had no new leads in their investigation into last month's vandalism incident.
