The New York State Comptroller says, while food safety inspectors are finding lots of serious violations, it doesn’t look like much is being done about them.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says a state audit found inspectors identified 984 cases of the most serious level of violations between 2014 and September 2017 but 73 percent resulted in no enforcement action. That included no fines, closures or other citations.

The audit of the inspections in the state was published by the Democrat’s office April 5 and reported, in addition to inactivity on violations that had been found by inspectors, there were problems in how data concerning inspections are reported.

The inspections that were reviewed were done by a variety of state and local health agencies.

The New York State Health Department says it will review policies.  Officials say, however, many times problems that are identified by inspectors are fixed at the time of the inspection, so no further action was deemed necessary.
