While the New York State Fair for 2020 is still up in the air, many festivals, carnivals and fairs have begun to cancel, including the Broome County Fair.

The latest casualty due to the cornonavirus is one of my favorite county fairs, The Chenango County Fair, held every summer in Norwich, New York. The Chenango County Fair website mentions the importance of a safe environment for fair-goers, vendors and others associated with the fair.

After considering the current known issues related to the COVID health crisis and the unknown factors for our Southern Tier Region in the future weeks, we determined we had no recourse but to cancel. -Chenango County Agricultural Society, Incorporated Board of Directors

This year's edition of the fair would have been their 173rd. The next fair is scheduled for August 10th through the 15th in 2021.

Every year is a fun time at the Chenango County Fair. One of my favorite memories is when the Charlie Daniels Band came to the fair for a concert. Charlie Daniels is one of the most friendly, personable, down home type of people you will ever meet. And can he sure play a mean fiddle, enough to ward off the devil for sure.

I feel most for all the vendors and exhibitors who look forward to participating in the festivals, carnivals and fairs that dot our counties every year. But we all know that safety is the main issue, and if an event can't ensure complete safety, it is in the best interest to postpone or cancel. We will remain hopeful for the return of festivals, carnivals and events next year, and each will have just that much more meaning and excitement for us all.
