A family whose home in Puerto Rico was wrecked by Hurricane Maria is starting a new life in Binghamton.

A husband and wife and their two sons arrived in Broome County several weeks ago after the hurricane caused massive devastation and knocked out electricity to the entire island.

Andres Arce and Jennifer Girona say they are grateful for the warm welcome they have received from people in the Binghamton area.

The couple and their sons initially spent nearly a week in a Broome County motel. They eventually moved to the Saratoga apartment complex on Binghamton's South Side.

Their 17-year-old son now is attending classes at Binghamton High School and their 12-year-old son is enrolled at East Middle School. The parents say their children are doing well in getting acclimated to the city schools.

While Arce and Girona are pleased with the way things are going for them in Binghamton, they continue to be concerned about their relatives and friends in Puerto Rico who are still working to recover following last fall's hurricane.
