After Delay, New Signals Installed for Binghamton Gateway Project

New traffic signals are in place, two months after most of the work for the State Street Gateway Project was completed in downtown Binghamton.

The installation of the signals near Governmental Plaza came about two months after construction for the redesigned sections of State and Hawley streets had been completed.

Delivery of the specially-designed poles needed to support the signal units over the intersection was delayed because of a backlog of orders at the factory where they are made.

City officials have said the new traffic and pedestrian signals at the busy intersection would cost about $340,000. The total price for the gateway project was reported to be $2.2 million.

The number of lanes designated for vehicle use has been reduced approaching the intersection.

Bike lanes and additional parking spaces were incorporated into the new design near City Hall and the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
