5 Fast Facts About Troy Gentry
Troy Gentry is one half of the county act Montgomery Gentry and will be visiting Binghamton at the Hawk's Toyota Country Lights Festival at NYSEG Stadium on Friday, July 22. Here are five fast facts you need to know about Troy before the concert!
Troy joined forces with Eddie Montgomery and Eddie's little brother, John Michael Montgomery in the 1990s and together they played in several bands. It wasn't until 1999 that he and Eddie decided to come together as a duo.
In between the time Troy, Eddie, and John Michael played in bands and Troy and Eddie decided to become a duo, Troy attempted a solo career. Except it didn't work out as he'd hoped. After winning a talent competition in 1994, Troy was sure he'd land a record deal. He didn't. But his lack of a record deal is what really pushed him to get serious about teaming up with Eddie as a duo.
In the fall of 2014, Troy's wife Angie was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in 2015 and was told she was cancer free before the fall of 2015.
Troy and his partner Eddie have done numerous shows for members of the military, but in 2006 they had the opportunity to join a USO tour and to perform for troops in Kuwait, Iraq, and Germany. Troy, especially, was touched by the opportunity, telling Christian Music, "It was an eye-opening experience for me seeing what our soldiers are doing to battle terrorism and help the Iraqis and Afghanis gain a better way of life."
Troy might be a big guy who sings about drinking and motorcycles but when it comes to his wife and daughter, Troy is a huge softie. Troy explained to Nashville Parent how becoming a dad has changed him saying, "I’ve grown up. I’m more responsible now. Before children, the social scene was more important to me. Now I’d rather be home with my family than out all night..." And here's a fun fact about how Troy's daughter Kaylee got her name -- Troy's wife's middle name is Kay and his middle name is Lee. Combine the two and you've got Kaylee!
