Thank you, Kathy Whyte for reminding us of this event that happened 6 years ago today.

It was 6 years ago that Jiverly Wong barricaded himself in the American Civic Association on Front Street in Binghamton and massacred 13 people before committing suicide.

The mass murder happened at around 10:30 a.m. on April 3, 2009 when the Johnson City man went to the ACA, where he had attended English language classes, and opened fire.

Over the past 5 years, family members and ACA staff have held memorials in front of the building. A park has been developed near the corner of Front and Clinton Streets.

It was a sad, tragic day that helps put things into proper perspective. It helped me realize that we don't have control of many things that happen in our lives.

We knock ourselves out doing things that we think are important. Making money, status among our friends and paying more attention to work then our family. Then an event like this makes me realize that it can be gone in an instant.

As we remember this event, may we also remember how we felt when events like this happen. Take the time to show appreciation to those who mean so much to you.
