It was surprising to see Beyonce on the CMA Awards stage on Wednesday night (Nov. 2). It was shocking to see the Dixie Chicks with her — even Natalie Maines was surprised.

The lead singer of the country trio tweeted that she was determined to never play the CMA Awards again, but when Beyonce calls, you pick up the phone.

“I’m pretty sure I’ve uttered the sentence, ‘I will never perform on the CMAs again as long as I live,’” Maines writes. “And then came (bee emoji).”

The Chicks helped Beyonce sing her song “Daddy Lessons” at the 2016 CMAs before playing a short clip of their hit song “Long Time Gone” — a fitting choice given their extended CMAs absence. The group and Beyonce have recorded a studio version of the song, as well.

Whether the performance was the beginning of a reconciliation between the Dixie Chicks and country music remains to be seen. It's been 13 years since Maines' comments about then-president George Bush earned them an unofficial ban from country radio, and since then, the trio has remained defiant. It hasn't hurt them musically, nor with artists in the industry. The group received a very warm reception inside the Bridgestone Arena, but fans on social media were more divided. The Dixie Chicks haven’t allowed media inside any of their 2016 tour stops.

"Daddy Lessons" is a song on Beyonce's new Lemonade album and one the Chicks have performed many times on their DCX MMXVI Tour. The Chicks recently announced dates for an Australian leg of their world tour.
