Monopoly Is Eliminating One Of Its Game Pieces

Monopoly has come up with a great way to get some free publicity.  Tell everyone that they're going to get rid of one of their classic game pieces.

Hasbro games has decided that it's time to get rid of one of their classic game pieces and you can decide which one goes.  In a brilliant strategic move, they've decided to let you, the fan, vote for your favorite piece.  Whichever game piece that gets the fewest votes will not pass go and be "sent to jail."  It's between the iron, race car, shoe, thimble, top hat, battleship (all of these were part of the original set in 1935), Scottie dog and the wheelbarrow (which were added in the 50's.)

Fans can go to Facebook.com/Monopoly by Feb 5th to cast their vote. You can also go to Twitter and use the hashtag #tokenvote.  When the voting ends, Hasbro will replace the piece with a new one.  Of course, that'll mean you'll have to vote again for what new piece you want.  The new piece will be golden.  The contenders are helicopter, cat, guitar, toy robot and diamond ring.  I hope it's the ring because I love Dime-on rings.  If you're a regular listener, you'll know the story behind that.

The good news for all Monopoly traditionalists is that the new Monopoly game won't be on the shelves until mid to late 2013.  So you'll have a chance to buy (or is it hoard) the game with the classic 8 tokens for a little while longer.  Not to be outdone, Hasbro has also announced that it will make a special Classic Monopoly Golden Token Edition that will include gold colored versions of all the 8 old tokens with the 5 new tokens included in the vote.

So go to the Monopoly Facebook and vote and do what most will do: Hoard copies of the game and sell it on  E-bay or craigslist.
