A new report claims the controversy over Little Big Town's current single, "Girl Crush," is mostly a media creation.

The media tempest apparently began with a guest blogger called "TexMex" on For the Country Record posting that the vocal group's latest song had been moved to light rotation after his station — where he claimed to be a music director — received a rash of complaints from listeners who misunderstood the song's lyrics about a jealous woman's obsession with a man's current romantic interest, believing the group was "promoting the gay agenda" with the song.

The Washington Post picked up the story and reported that the song was being dropped from stations all over the country, quoting Alana Lynn, a morning co-host on 104.3 FM, as saying she hasn't seen so much negative listener feedback since “the Dixie Chicks‘ President Bush comments." However, WOW 104.3 has not dropped the song.

The furor has been widely reported by various media, but according to Billboard, it may not be much of a controversy at all. In a new article, the publication claims to have consulted with more than a dozen prominent radio programmers all over the country, with most of them reporting few or no complaints about "Girl Crush." The piece also points out that its current ranking at No. 32 with a bullet on the Country Airplay chart is consistent with the normal chart life of any song, and that 139 out of 145 of the week's reporting stations are currently playing the song.

The article also quotes from several radio programmers from Texas to Kansas City to Seattle, with just one — Chris Huff, music director with KILT in Houston — reporting a single specific instance of a listener turning up at the station to complain about the track.

For the Country Record responded to the Billboard piece with a new post revealing the identity of the guest blogger, which they had previously protected for reasons of job security. According the the blog, "TexMex" is really Lee France, the music director for WACO 100 FM and KAGG-FM in Texas. The site is sticking by its source and the story.

Little Big Town have taken the unusual step of recording a commercial for "Girl Crush" for stations to play prior to spinning the song, explaining the lyrics to alleviate any confusion. The band members have also been making the media rounds, defending the song and decrying those who find it objectionable.

“That’s just shocking to me, the close-mindedness of that, when that’s just not what the song was about,” Karen Fairchild tells the Post. “But what if it were? It’s just a greater issue of listening to a song for what it is.”
