How were the Golden Globes’ Ratings? Jimmy Fallon’s Show Proved a Hit

NBC was clearly onto something when it recruited Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon to emcee the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s awards show: The 74th Annual Golden Globes saw a 1.5 million rise in viewers up from last year’s broadcast.

The three-hour broadcast (which ran just several minutes over, commendably) pulled in 20 million viewers, up 8% from 2016’s Ricky Gervais-hosted show. After 2014’s telecast hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, which brought in nearly 21 million viewers, the 2017 Golden Globes was the second most-watched Golden Globes since 2014.

The Golden Globes are traditionally the third-highest rated awards show after the Academy Awards and the Grammys, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Still, the Globes’ rating lift is commendable in a time when recent broadcasts have seen linear viewership plunge in the era of streaming and social media: The 2016 Oscars saw the second-worst ratings in the show’s history, the 2016 Emmys hit an all-time numbers low, and the largely abysmal 2016 MTV Video Music Awards saw a massive plunge as well. So it’s safe to assume the Golden Globes will ask Jimmy back for next year.

Guess awards shows aren’t dead, after all?
