It was pretty much immediately after finding out we were having a child that my husband and I sat down to talk through all of the questions running through our minds. Even though we both knew it would be years down the road before our little one would go to school, one of the same questions we both had was, what to do when John is in school and there’s a snow-day.

I hate to admit, but how to handle snow days wasn't even something that crossed my mind until I became a mom, but it’s a very real issue for parents. Jay and I are lucky to be able to work opposite shifts so that one of us can be home with our son at all times, but not all families are able to pull that off and they have to find a way to care for their child and keep their job at the same time.

We live in a world where family and business don’t exactly gel and those of us who work for businesses who understand the importance of family first are in the minority. Most businesses don’t care if your child has a snow-day and the fallback babysitter is sick. They want you at work, and now. So what do you do when you’re in a pinch?

Did you know that the YMCA of Broome County offers a weather camp? This is such an amazing thing for working parents who’ve run out of options. If Binghamton or Johnson City schools are closed, you can take your child to the Binghamton YMCA or the West Family YMCA and they’ll keep an eye on your kindergartner to 12-year-old from 7am-6pm for $37 for the whole 11 hours! And no, you don’t have to be a member of the YMCA to take advantage of this program.

Reach out to Nikki at 607-772-0560, extension 140 to learn more. And, don’t forget to ask her about holiday camp, which is another feature the YMCA offers where they’ll watch your kids during select school holidays.

If you’d like to join the YMCA of Broome County, stop into either branch before November 12, 2016, and drop my name. When you tell them I sent you, they’ll waive your $50 joiner fee!
