Supporting Elderly Community Members: A Guide To Essential Donations
Let's talk about something close to my heart. Supporting our elderly community members through food banks. I find myself thinking about my parents and who would take care of them if something happened to me and my sister and my brother.
My parents would look to something like the CHOW Warehouse to get the food that they need. Sometimes people forget about the elderly people who need the help of food warehouses and pantries.
Here are some of the foods that our older community members need when they go to a food pantry. So while you’re collecting items for the Food A Bago Food Drive to benefit Broome County CHOW, think about picking up some of these items.
Nutrient-Rich Foods
Many elderly individuals need foods that are high in nutrients and easy to digest. Think about non-perishable items like canned fruits and vegetables, soups, and protein-rich foods like canned fish or beans.
Easy-to-Prepare Meals
Some of our elderly friends have limited mobility or energy for cooking, so having access to easy-to-prepare meals can be a game-changer. This could include items like instant oatmeal, canned pasta meals, or microwaveable rice packets.
Dietary Restrictions
Some of our older friends need to follow specific dietary restrictions due to health conditions. It's helpful to include low-sodium or sugar-free options, as well as foods suitable for diabetic or gluten-free diets.
Hygiene and Personal Care Items
Let's not forget that hygiene products are important too, like adult diapers, personal hygiene products, and toiletries can make a real difference in the lives of our elderly community members.
