A father-to-be died and his brother was hurt when an explosive device being built for a child gender-reveal party blew up in the town of Liberty.

Authorities say 28-year-old Christopher Pekny was killed in the blast, which happened shortly before noon Sunday.

According to New York State Police, Pekny was constructing the device at a Sullivan County residence.

The explosion resulted in the death of Pekny. His brother - 27-year-old Michael Pekny, also of Liberty - was injured. He was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown. His condition was not release.

The blast is being investigated by state police and the agency's bomb disposal unit.
