‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Director Explains Why This Version of Peter Doesn’t Have a Spidey Sense
“My Spider Sense is tingling” is perhaps the most classic of Spider-Man catchphrases — but you won’t hear it in the new Spider-Man: Homecoming. The newest version of our friendly neighborhood web-slinger is different than his filmic predecessors in many ways, a big one being his lack of the traditional Spidey Sense, which alerts him to the presence of dangers he can’t immediately see. Homecoming director Jon Watts explained that the decision to leave his sixth sense out of the movie was very much on purpose.
While speaking to CinemaBlend, Watts said the reason we won’t be seeing the Spider Sense in this film is simply because it’s already been done so many times before.
I feel like we have seen a lot of Spider Sense in the previous films, so we didn't really lean into that as hard as they have in the previous films. But I do think it is a really interesting thing to explore.
That’s a pretty good reason, and in keeping with this film switching things up for what we think we know the narrative of Spider-Man to be. Instead of making his own suit, this Peter Parker wears a tricked-out uniform designed by Tony Stark himself; Aunt May is a lot younger than she usually is; we don’t slog through the whole spider bite origin story yet again; Uncle Ben is — well, Uncle Ben is still dead. This ain’t your granddaddy’s Spider-Man, and at this point, that may be exactly what we need.
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7.
