Spartans Smash Waverly At Home
It was a big night of high school football as the Maine-Endwell Spartans hosted the Waverly Wolverines. Both teams won their matchup last week and they were looking for more of the same in this game.
Just under eight minutes to go in the first, Dan George on the quarterback keeper scored the first touchdown of the game as Maine-Endwell takes the early 7-0 lead. Waverly responded with a handoff to David Hallett for the touchdown which tied the score after the extra point conversion with 1:30 remaining in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Spartans once again marched downfield and ended the drive with six more points from Nick DeLucia on the quarterback keeper. The extra point was converted to make it 14-7 in favor of the home team.
Later, Mike Mancini on the sweep was able to run it into the endzone for another Spartans score. The extra point was blocked, making it 20-7 for Maine-Endwell with eight minutes remaining in the first half.
To start the second half, a touchdown was scored by Hallett for Waverly. The extra point was missed, so it was 20-13 with nine minutes to go in the third. DeLucia's pass to Mancini on fourth and five was good for six. Mancini also converted the two-point conversion for a 28-13 lead for the Spartans.
Mancini would score for a third time on a toss sweep for a 63-yard run. Spartans went for two, but couldn't convert. Mancini broke out for another long run soon after and got another score. Another two-point attempt wasn't converted, so the Maine-Endwell lead bumped up to 40-13 with one and a half minutes left in the third quarter.
Austin Kimble from 30 yards out busted through for a touchdown for the Wolverines. The kick was good so the score became 40-20 with Maine-Endwell remaining in the lead with four minutes left in the game.
Jack Hopko got one in the endzone for the Spartans. The extra point was good, making it 47-20 with under two minutes remaining. Hallet on the carry for Waverly broke the plane for another touchdown. The extra point was good, making it 47-27 Spartans on top.
Maine-Endwell was victorious by a final score of 47-27. They improve their record to 2-1 overall while Waverly falls to the same record. Next week, the Spartans game will be on the air once again as they host Chenango Forks. Be sure to tune in to News Radio 1290 WNBF Binghamton and wnbf.com for the play-by-play from Roger Neel.
