Southern Tier Republicans Say it Was a Good Election Night for GOP

Republicans are claiming victory in some key Southern Tier State races.

In the 52nd New York State Senate District, incumbent Republican Fred Akshar of Binghamton has handily defeated Libertarian Party challenger Tom Quiter 78,734 votes to 9,716.  Akshar, a former Broome County undersheriff, issued a statement saying “Every Vote must be counted, but I’m humbled and grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received.” 

In the races for New York State Assembly, Democrat Donna Lupardo of Endwell ran unopposed.  In the 122nd District that had been represented by Republican Clifford Crouch until he announced his retirement last year after over two decades in the office, Republican Joseph Angelino is the apparent winner with 69% of the vote (35,625) over Democrat Richard Shaw with 24.82% (12,800). The district covers part of eastern Broome County as well as Delaware and parts of Chenango Counties.

In the 124th Assembly District that includes the Town of Maine in Broome County as well as Tioga and Chemung Counties, the apparent winner is Republican incumbent Chris Friend with 32,845 votes to Democrat Randy Reid’s 14,827.

Broome County Republican Chairman Bijoy Datta called November 3 “another incredibly successful night for Broome County Republican candidates.”

He says, excluding dozens of races where there were no Democrats on the ticket, the GOP candidates in Broome won or lead in 23 contested in 23 contested seats.
