Southern Tier Teens Soar to National Recognition
Two remarkable young members of the Southern Tier Composite Squadron have earned one of the Civil Air Patrol’s highest honors, and our community couldn’t be more proud!
Cadet Captains Joshua Nelson and Lily Emmond have been awarded the prestigious Amelia Earhart Award, a distinction that represents hard work, leadership, and a dedication to excellence that goes far beyond the ordinary.
An Award That Honors True Dedication
The Amelia Earhart Award isn’t something that’s simply handed out. Named after the trailblazing aviator who inspired generations to dream bigger, it’s reserved for cadets who complete Phase III of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. That means mastering challenging leadership and aerospace education courses, excelling in physical fitness, and showing unwavering integrity. Lily and Joshua didn’t just meet those standards, they exceeded them.
Lily Emmond: Leading With Purpose
At just 15 years old, Lily Emmond of Vestal serves as the Squadron Cadet Commander. In this role, she doesn’t just lead; she inspires. Her ability to motivate her fellow cadets and guide them toward their goals speaks volumes about her natural leadership skills. Lily’s passion for the program is matched only by her dedication to helping others rise to their potential.
Joshua Nelson: Committed to Service
Seventeen-year-old Joshua Nelson of Maryland, NY, is the Squadron Cadet Emergency Services Officer. His role is vital, ensuring the squadron is ready to respond when needed. Joshua’s commitment to emergency preparedness and community service has left a lasting mark on his fellow cadets and the mission they share.
Pride in the Next Generation
The Southern Tier Composite Squadron is more than just a program, it’s a family, one that works tirelessly to grow strong leaders who care about their community and the world beyond it. The accomplishments of Cadet Captains Emmond and Nelson stand as proof of what young people can achieve when they work hard, dream big, and serve with heart.
Inspiring Others to Aim Higher
While this award celebrates Lily and Joshua, it also sends a powerful message to every cadet in the program: dedication pays off, and the sky is truly the limit. The Amelia Earhart Award is not just a milestone; it’s a stepping stone to even greater achievements, and we can’t wait to see where their journey takes them next.
