Johnson City police are investigating the theft of bronze grave markers and some copper from Calvary Cemetery.

Six military grave markers were taken and two others were damaged. Copper downspouts also were stolen from a chapel at the Catholic cemetery located just east of the Oakdale Mall.

Cemetery operations manager Randy Ramey said he discovered the missing plaques and other metal early Thursday morning. He estimated the weight of each marker at between 20 and 25 pounds. The thieves pried the markers off cemetery monuments.

Ramey said the value of the grave markers and the stolen copper totaled several thousand dollars.

The cemetery has entrances off Harry L. Drive and Fairview Street.
