Sections of Routes 17 and 434 in western Broome County were shut down following an incident in which a gun reportedly was fired toward a police car.

Route 17 was closed between the Tioga County line and Exit 67 in Vestal shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Initial reports indicated a Vestal police officer stopped to check on an apparently disabled vehicle on the highway.

At least two shots were said to have been fired from inside the vehicle. There were no reports of injuries.

New York State Police, along with sheriff's deputies from Broome and Tioga counties quickly shut down Route 17 and a portion of Route 434 in Vestal.

Eastbound cars and tractor-trailers on Route 17 were turned around at a crossover at the county line.

Police called in a drone to survey the scene from the air.
