Purple Heart Recipient Brings Hope to Broome County Dispatchers
With the intent to infuse hope and a fresh perspective into the dedicated emergency dispatchers of Broome County, a Purple Heart recipient, and motivational speaker, Rick Yarosh, recently conducted special presentations during training sessions at the Broome County Office of Emergency Services in Binghamton.
Yarosh, a retired United States Army sergeant from New York, is a husband, father of two, and an expert in spreading the message of HOPE (Hold On, Possibilities Exist). Yarosh has traveled extensively across the country as a solo motivational speaker and as part of Sweethearts & Heroes, a student empowerment and empathy activation program. Sweethearts & Heroes, dedicated to combating bullying and suicide, has reached over 2 million students through its presentations spanning from New England to Hawaii.
Having been deployed to Iraq in late 2005, Yarosh encountered a life-altering event on September 1, 2006, when he was severely injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Abu Ghraib.
Enduring half a year of recovery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, Yarosh fought through 2nd and 3rd-degree burns covering over 60% of his body. The incident led to the amputation of his right leg below the knee, in addition to the loss of both ears, his nose, multiple fingers, and the majority of the function in his hands.
Yarosh's story and resilience have not only inspired millions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including sports teams, schools, churches, military groups, and non-profit organizations but have also earned him the prestigious Purple Heart for his heroic service.
Reflecting on his experience with the emergency dispatchers, Yarosh recognized their immense challenges in dealing with distressing situations daily. "I think the heroes that do this job have to hear some of the worst things people could ever hear," Yarosh empathized, acknowledging the toll their work can take. His mission was to provide them with HOPE and appreciation for their invaluable service to the community.
Richard M. Wrobleski, Senior Dispatcher, and Training Coordinator at Broome County Office of Emergency Services, extended the invitation to Yarosh as a means of offering a "fresh perspective" and unique brand of hope to the 50 dispatchers under his charge who are grappling with the strains and pressures of a staff shortage within the division. As Broome County looks to fill several full-time and part-time dispatcher positions, the dispatchers needed the uplifting message brought by Yarosh.
Wrobleski shared his admiration for Yarosh's impact on his team during the training sessions. Describing the presentations as "amazing," he noted the unwavering attention and engagement from the dispatchers throughout the hour-long sessions.
The heartfelt responses from the attendees, punctuated by sentiments like "Amazing," "Powerful," "Incredible story," and "Wow," were a testament to the profound effect Yarosh's words had on the dispatchers he addressed.

In a world drowning in challenges and adversity, the resilience and optimism embodied by individuals like Rick Yarosh help to light the way for those who face the darkest moments.
