Police: Binghamton Bicyclist Had Loaded Gun
A man who was spotted by Binghamton police riding a bicycle on a downtown sidewalk faces gun and drug charges.
Authorities say 37-year-old Jamel Coates of Brooklyn fled when officers tried to stop him. They say when he was found on Jay Street, he collided with a patrol vehicle.
After the collision, Coates allegedly tried to get away but he was taken into custody.
Police say they discovered Coates possessed a loaded nine-millimeter handgun and some crack cocaine.
Coates was charged with weapon and drug possession. He also was charged with riding a bicycle on a city sidewalk. He was arraigned in city court and sent to Broome County Jail.
