A man suspected of fleeing the scene of a crash on Interstate 81 south of Binghamton was taken into custody after a police search that lasted several hours.

According to New York State Police, the man was arrested late Tuesday afternoon in a wooded area off Duell Road in the town of Kirkwood.

Authorities said the search was launched following a crash on the highway shortly after 11 a.m.

Investigators said the driver of an Audi left the area by jumping into the bed of a pickup truck. He then fled on foot into a wooded area.

Police said the car involved in the crash had been reported stolen in Florida.

State police were assisted by units from other area law enforcement agencies in searching the area.

At one point, the wanted man allegedly stole an all-terrain vehicle.

Troopers did not say what charges would be filed, nor did they indicate whether the man had been sought in connection with incidents elsewhere.
