I grew up in a river town where once the ice was hard enough, local kids would heft their skates to the river or nearby lake and skate to their heart's content. Ice skating was a daily activity when I was growing up but I’ve noticed it isn’t really that way anymore.

There’s something romantic about the idea of ice skating, isn’t there? Like stepping back in time, right? That magical feeling and memories are what one Twin Tiers business is hoping to offer the community this winter.

If you take a straight shot up Route 26 in Vestal Center and just keep going, you'll eventually cross the border into Pennsylvania where Route 26 turns into Route 267. Keep driving straight and you'll eventually come to a "t" in the road. A stone castle gas station will face you and Flynn's Greenhouse and Craft Shop will be to your right.

You will have found yourself in the fantastic town of Lawton, Pennsylvania (Susquehanna County) where the entire community is all about togetherness and people will greet you as though they've known you for a lifetime, even if you're a stranger.

Flynn's came up with a fantastic idea and if the winter weather cooperates, it will bring back some of the fun of our younger years. The idea? To build an actual outdoor ice skating rink. How fun would that be?!?

If and when the ice-skating is able to open is completely dependent on the weather but wouldn’t it be fun to take a leisurely drive through the country and end at an actual outdoor ice-skating rink? If you have your own skates, you might want to plan to take them with you, but if you don’t, Flynn’s will have about 30 pairs that you can rent.

Keep your eye on Flynn’s Facebook page for updates as to when the rink will open, hours, and cost.
