One Step Closer To Cashless Tolls For NYS Thruway

Back in May, the New York State Thruway Authority held a Q&A meeting on Grand Island, to discuss the potential of cashless tolls for the entire New York State thruway by late next year.

On Monday, those cashless tolls took a step closer to being reality.

According to WIVB, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the state's Thruway Authority approved Cashless Tolling Constructors, LLC as the Design-Build team that will be converting the 52 toll barriers on the thruway - a $355.3 million investment.

Despite many people being against the cashless tolls for the potential billing problems, Amherst Town Supervisor Brian Kulpa is for it.

"This will cut down on traffic and be better for the environment," Kulpa said. "The town often deals with congestion on certain roadways near the thruway entrance, and that in some places the smell of car exhaust is overwhelming. If this could reduce traffic by just 10 percent it will be a positive," added Kulpa.

As of now, we will go completely cashless tolls on the state thruway by 2020.
