A price increase may soon be coming to NYSEG customers if NYSEG has their way and if approved by the New York regulators.

According to the Press and Sun Bulletin, "the proposed increase would raise average residential electric bills by $8 a month and average residential natural gas bills by $10 a month. Increases could be higher or lower based on usage and service classification."

Overall, if approved, the increase to customers will be between 10-11%.  The last rate increase was in the fall of 2012.

NYSEG cites a number of reasons for their increase request including taxes and repairs to the current operating system.

According to WNBF.com, New York State Electric and Gas says it needs more money to pay for recovery from Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee and to invest in system reliability.

There will be opportunities to voice opposition to the increase as there will be public hearings across the state.
