New York State Police Save Bald Eagle Near Binghamton
We are only a few weeks away from celebrating our Independence Day and in some ways, it feels like we've been taking it on the chin lately. However, we don't give up, and even when we feel like we've been hit by a truck, we keep going.
In some ways, what happened on June 14th represents the situation that we may be feeling. According to the New York State Police, three men saved a bald eagle that was hit by a side mirror of a car.
It took place on I-88 in Sidney and the driver didn't try to miss the bird and they kept going. The eagle was taken by the NYS ENCON Officier to a Wildlife Center.
If you have any info on the driver who hit our national bird, I'm sure that the New York State Police would love to hear from you.
You Could Go To Jail If You Kill A Bald Eagle
Bald eagles are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. If you were to kill one, you could go to jail for a year and be fined up to $100,000.
I think that it's a great feeling when we have the chance to save something from the wild but it's especially gratifying when it's a bald eagle. This reminds me an incident that happened just a few months ago in Broome County.
On April 3rd, a bald eagle was shot in a tree on Nanticoke Road in Binghamton. A reward of up to $5,000 was being offered for any information that helped find the ones responsible.
I haven't heard about any updates but you can go here to find out more about that incident.
