Enhanced Transportation Options in New York’s Southern Tier
Residents in Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Delaware, and Otsego Counties now have access to an expanded range of transportation services, all thanks to the Getthere program.
The Getthere program is dedicated to helping individuals maintain their independence and access vital services, offering rides to medical appointments, emergency food access, and employment to ensure continued independent living while receiving essential services.
Getthere Program Features
The Getthere program, run by the Rural Health Network of SCNY, Inc., provides several key features to meet the transportation needs of residents. These include:
Transportation Assistance: Accessible by calling the Getthere call center at (855) 373-4040 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., where assistance with securing rides to various destinations, including medical appointments, is available.
Connection to Care: Assistance for individuals without Medicaid in accessing healthcare services, such as prescription pick-up and delivery.
Transportation to Employment: Navigating transportation options and creating plans to get people to and from work.
Travel Training: Empowering individuals with the knowledge to use transportation safely and independently.
MAS Navigation: Assisting individuals with Medicaid in setting up rides through Medical Answering Services (MAS), the Medicaid non-emergency transportation provider.
Goal of the Getthere Program
Nick Cecconi, the Director of Getthere, emphasized the importance of reliable transportation as a vital service for individuals to maintain their independence and quality of life. The program aims to eliminate barriers to healthcare and essential services, ensuring that no one is left behind due to transportation challenges.
Volunteer Opportunities and Community Support
Contributions toward transportation costs are appreciated to sustain the program, although it stresses that no one will be denied service due to an inability or unwillingness to pay for services.
Additionally, the program is seeking volunteer drivers to assist their neighbors, offering flexibility in hours, mileage reimbursement at the 2025 rate of 70 cents per mile, and secondary insurance coverage.
Initiative Administration and Contact
Administered by the Rural Health Network of SCNY, Inc., the initiative is dedicated to enhancing access to healthcare and essential services for residents, especially in rural areas across the region.
