If it feels like the sun is staying around forever on Friday, you’re not imagining things. It’s not because we’re closer to the Sun, it’s the Earth’s tilted axis that changes how much sunlight that different parts of the world get during the year.

The Science Behind It (Without Putting You To Sleep)

When the Earth tilts toward the Sun, we get longer days and more direct rays think. On the solstice, the Sun will be directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer 23.5 degrees north of the equator.

People Have Been Celebrating This Forever

The summer solstice isn’t just a date on the calendar, it’s a big deal and always has been. Throughout history and all over the world, people have found ways to mark the moment. Ancient Egyptians tied it to the rising Nile River, a signal of new beginnings.

The Irish believed it was the perfect time to cut hazel branches to help them find gold, water, and treasure. In parts of Europe, it’s all about Midsummer which means bonfires on the hills, parties that last well into the night, and Stonehenge gatherings.

How Can New Yorkers Get In On The Fun?

Here are three easy ways to mark the solstice right here in the Empire State.

1. This is the longest day of the year so take advantage of it! Wake up early, watch the sun come up, and think about what you want this summer to look like. Whether it’s more family time, or finally trying that hobby you’ve been putting off, let the sunrise inspire you.

2. It just so happens this weekend are some of the best stargazing nights in June. If you’ve got a tent and a free night, head out to the Catskills, the Adirondacks, or go out in your own backyard.

3. This year, Midsummer Eve lands right on the solstice. Tradition says bonfires on this night help ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.
