New York State Offering Subsidies To Renters But For a Limited Time

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to help renters during the COVID-19 pandemic and the state is prepared to help in a big way.

According to WKBW, New York State is offering rental subsidies to renters. The intent is to financially help those who have lost income during the pandemic and are renters.

"It's critically important that people are able to stay safely in their homes as we progress through our data-driven, phased reopening, and the COVID Rent Relief Program reinforces that commitment with direct assistance to those in the greatest need," said Cuomo.

Renters would receive a one-time subsidy, paid directly to landlords or housing providers. Tenants would NOT be required to repay.

Here's who is eligible (all requirements must be met):

• A renter with a permanent residence in New York State.
• Household income must be 80 percent of the area median income, adjusted for household size (before March 1st, 2020).
• Household must be "rent burdened" -- which means paying more than 30 percent of gross monthly income towards your rent (before March 1st, 2020 and at the time of application).
• Those applying must have lost income between April 1st and July 31st, 2020.

The application process will only be open for two weeks and begins this Thursday.
