New York State Electric and Gas is taking steps to distance workers from customers in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

NYSEG and Rochester Gas and Electric last week announced they are suspending all inside meter readings and shifting to estimated usage or customer-reported readings filed on the mobile app. The utility is also temporarily suspending service shut-offs due to non-payment.

NYSEG and RG&E walk-in centers are closed but customers can continue to communicate with the utility through website, mobile app or calling the customer service number on their bill.

Late payment charges are also suspended.

Customers of entities requiring payments such as utilities or goverment-imposed fees or penalties like tax or ticket payments at this time should be aware of potential scammers calling with threats of interruption of service or police action for non-payment.  Any suspicious contacts should be checked out with the utility, government or police agency.
