New York Among Top States Most Vulnerable to Cyberattacks
There's some interesting data about the states that are most at risk of cyberattacks, and it looks like New York is right up there.
According to cybersecurity and compliance expert Kiteworks, New York got a risk score of 7.84 out of 10, making it the second most at-risk state in the US. With a population of over 19,500,000, New York had over 27,000 annual cyberattack victims between 2020 and 2023. Woah!
It's not just the number of victims but also the financial losses from cyberattacks. The Empire State soared over 75%, for a total of $440,673,485. It's not just New York facing these threats though.

Colorado took the number one spot, with a risk score of 7.96. Despite its smaller population of 5,877,610, Colorado has been hit hard, with a 58.7% increase in financial losses from cyberattacks since 2017. That’s a big deal especially considering it's 65% higher than the neighboring state of Utah.
Then there is Nevada. Apparently it's not just about casinos and shows because it came in third as the most at-risk state, with a risk score of 7.62. The state has seen a 27.6% increase in cyberattack victim counts since 2020, and it's been hit with losses of nearly $44,000,000.
As for the most common and costly cyberattacks, Business Email Compromise (BEC) takes the top spot for having the highest financial impact. BEC racked up over $1 billion in losses since 2020.
Did you know that non-payment/non-delivery attacks are the most common cyber threat in the US, with over 60,000 incidents since 2020?
Patrick Spencer from Kiteworks pointed out that cyberattacks are on the rise, both in the number of them and financial impact. If you haven't done so yet, your business should seriously amp up your security measures.
