Vestal Supervisor Says Police Bodycam Video Will Be Released

The Vestal town supervisor said police bodycam recordings from the fatal shooting at a Sequoia Lane home will be made public when the state attorney general's office approves the release.

Authorities have said 38-year-old Eslam Hegazy died after he was shot by a Vestal police officer Wednesday.

According to New York State Police, Hegazy apparently was experiencing a mental health crisis when Vestal officers were sent to his residence at 581 Sequoia Lane.

Hegazy was said to have been armed with a knife and making threats to harm himself. He allegedly threw a television at police before raising the knife and moving toward an officer.

In a news release issued Friday afternoon, town supervisor Maria Sexton noted the attorney general's office is investigating the incident.

She said while the investigation is underway Vestal police "are not permitted to release any details, nor are they allowed to comment on the incident."

Sexton said she wants to assure residents that "Vestal Police personnel are professional, appropriate, and are well practiced at de-escalation."

The town supervisor said video recordings from police body-worn cameras will be released when that is permitted by the attorney general's office.

In her statement, Sexton said she is "confident that our residents will understand that our officers acted appropriately."

According to an online post by the Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier, Eslam Hegazy "was a great dad who lived for his family." He was survived by his wife, Dr. Eman Elatter "and three beautiful children—his 8 and 7-year-old daughters and his 5-month-old baby boy."
