Vestal Plans to Build Restore Carousel in Arnold Park
Town of Vestal officials say a project to add a fully-restored 1917 Herschell carousel to a a park will cost about $1 million.
The town board has decided to move forward with a project to place the merry-go-round in Arnold Park.
Last month, officials said the town has received a donation of parts of a century-old carousel and an assessment was being made about moving forward with a restoration project.
The review concluded all of the wood for the carousel must be restored. Some parts of the ride are missing and would have to be replaced.
Town officials hope to cover the cost of the project through donations and grants. According to a news release issued Tuesday, the town could receive $300,000 in state funding for the restoration.
The carousel would be built as the needed donations are received. There would be no charge for rides on the merry-go-round.
The carousel would have 36 horses and two chariots. Plans call for the restoration of all of the original wood parts.
The town is planning to start collecting contributions from residents and businesses to support the planned project.
