Binghamton police say two people died and at least one other person was hurt in a three-vehicle collision in a Court Street construction zone.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday on Court Street between Century Drive and the Kirkwood town line.

The collision occurred in a work area where traffic is limited to one lane in either direction.

The drivers of a sedan and a sport utility vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of a third vehicle that was damaged was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City by Superior ambulance for treatment of injuries.

Binghamton police chief Joseph Zikuski said it appeared a driver tried to pass a vehicle in the construction zone where no passing is permitted, causing the fatal crash.

Court Street - U.S. Route 11 - was closed from Fairview Avenue in Binghamton to Page Road in Kirkwood.

Binghamton police were assisted at the scene by New York State Police and Broome County sheriff's deputies.

Construction crews last spring began work to replace an aging retaining wall on Court Street near the Binghamton Psychiatric Center.

The $6.8 million project is scheduled to be completed in about one year.
