Taco Bell Takedown: Front Street Speedway Station Demolished
The Taco Bell expansion push in the Binghamton area continues with the removal of an abandoned gas station in the town of Chenango.
In addition to a new restaurant on Upper Front Street, the chain plans to open a location later this year in Tioga County.
LCP Group of Vestal is demolishing an old Speedway convenience store at 1243 Upper Front Street. The small building and canopy were built in 1988 for Hess.
The site near the Northgate Plaza will be cleared in the next few days and construction of the Taco Bell restaurant is to start within two weeks.
Abdul Tulunay of Haza Bell of Northeast previously told WNBF News he expected the Front Street location to open in early August.
Several dozen pets reportedly were buried in a small cemetery between the old gas station and Interstate 81. The restaurant developers told town of Chenango officials that "we won't touch" what remains of that cemetery.
Another Taco Bell operator is making final preparations for a new restaurant in the town of Owego.
That unit is to be located on the site of an abandoned Chemung Canal Trust bank branch office on Route 17C in the town of Owego.
The restaurant will be built just west of the Aldi grocery store that opened last week. That business was built on the site of the iconic Treadway Inn conference center which was torn down last summer.
