New York City Begins Offering Free Abortion Pills

New York City has become the first city in the United States to start offering free abortion pills at public sexual health clinics.

According to a report by Christine Fernando of USA Today, one public clinic in the Bronx became the first to offer free abortion pills, with three other clinics in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens to join by the end of the year.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated "For too long, health and health care has been centered around men, but that changes today. We have been standing on the sidelines of women's health for too long, and I have personally seen firsthand how the health system is letting our women down. It is long overdue that we break taboos and make New York City a model for the future of women's health care. We are going to build a city that is here for all women and girls."

Funding for the program comes from a $1.2 million package for sexual health services. When all four locations are open, they will be able to provide up to 10,000 medication abortions each year, with services being open both to New York City residents and visitors, even visitors who are undocumented migrants.

"A healthier New York City requires intentional investments in reducing health care disparities that systematically disadvantage Black, Latinx and marginalized communities," said Wendy Stark, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York. "This includes ensuring equal access to sexual and reproductive health services and compassionate abortion care."
