House Destroyed by Fire at Homeless Camp Near Glendale Park

Fire tore through a two-story house next to a homeless encampment along Nanticoke Creek in the town of Union.

The blaze on Glendale Drive was reported around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said they believe no one was living in the structure at the time of the fire.

Flames were shooting through the roof of the small house when the West Corners fire chief arrived at the scene.

Access to the burning building was difficult because of its location some distance away from the roadway. The house is next to Nanticoke Creek, just east of Glendale Technology Park.

Firefighters battled the blaze only from the exterior of the building because of structural stability and limited access.

The fire was brought under control after about 20 minutes. Crews worked to extinguish pockets of flames for another two hours.

According to the fire department, no injuries were reported. No information about the investigation was immediately available from New York State Police.

Tents and other items near the fire-damaged house indicated several people had recently been living in the area between Glendale Drive and the creek.
